Back in 1912, Beijing Railway Management Institute, the predecessor of Beijing Jiaotong University, set up “Class B of Advanced Electrical Engineering”, until now, the discipline of electrical engineering in BJTU has had a history of over one century. After the establishment of People’s Republic of China in 1949, new demands on economic development appeared. Based on that, Beijing Railway Institute set up the department of electrical engineering in 1958. In 2000, the former Beijing Electric Power College was merged into Northern Jiaotong University and directly administrated by the Ministry of Education. Electrical engineering and other related majors were then reorganized and made up the later School of Electrical Engineering in Beijing Jiaotong University.
Located at the Electrical Engineering Building in the southeast of the main campus. The School of Electrical Engineering of Beijing Jiaotong University currently has teaching and research units of Department of Electric Power Engineering, Department of Electric Drive and Control Engineering, Institute of Power Electronics and Electric Traction, Institute of Electric Machinery & Apparatus, Institute of Renewable Energy, Institute of Traction Power Supply, Electrotechnics & Electronics Teaching Center (including Institute of Superconducting Technology), and Center of Electrical Engineering Laboratories, etc. In 2015, the demonstration school, "Hanergy School of Renewable Energy", was established with the support of the School, aiming at culturing more international talents.
Currently the school has 172 faculty members in total, including 113 full-time teachers, 4 foreign teachers, 37 professors and 62 associate professors, 58 doctoral supervisors, 110 master tutors, and 85% of the full-time teachers have doctoral degrees. At present, the school has 1 national candidate of the "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project", 1 member of National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 IEEE member, 1 IET Fellow member, 1 member of "One Hundred Leading Talents of Beijing in Science and Technology ", 1 "Distinguished Teacher of Beijing " and 1 "Young Distinguished Teacher of Beijing", and 4 experts who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council. There are over 2200 students in our school, with over 1200 full-time undergraduates, around 200 PhD students and over 600 master students.
The school carries out first discipline education of electrical engineering including undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees, as well as providing post-doctoral training in the field of electrical engineering. Two disciplines -- Electric Power & Its Automation, and Power Electronics & Electric Drive, have been named as the Provincial Key Disciplines. Furthermore, the school has a national teaching Team, a Beijing municipal innovation team, a national demonstration center of laboratory teaching, a national education center of engineering practice and a national joint demonstrative training base for graduates of engineering major.
Supported by the school, multiple innovative research platforms have been established, such as the National Research and Development Center for Energy Active Distribution Network Technology, the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education for Electric Traction Electric Traction Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, and Beijing Research Center for Electrical Engineering Technology of Rail Transit. Cooperating with enterprises, the school also set up "BJTU Sub-Institute of Green Power System Research Institute of CRRC", "CRRC Datong-BJTU Joint Research Center of Electrical Technology for Rail Transit" and other joint scientific research institutions. A total of 846 scientific research projects were newly established in the past five years, with the contract funds being over 530 million yuan. Among the new research projects, there are 370 government-sponsored programs, which includes 3 key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 12 general projects, 9 youth funds, 1 joint fund, 1 key sub-project and 1 outstanding youth fund; 55 national key research and development programs (including projects and tasks); 5 scientific research projects of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; and 19 international cooperation projects. The school also has 1 national scientific research award and 17 provincial and ministerial or first-grade academic research awards.
It has established cooperation with many universities and well-known enterprises in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Greece, Denmark, Japan, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Australia and other countries. And it has built an international cooperation laboratory-- Beijing Jiaotong University Rockwell Automation Laboratory. Coworking with overseas universities, a batch of research cooperation institutions were established, such as "Beijing Jiaotong University -- University of Michigan Power Battery Application R&D Center" and "Beijing Jiaotong University -- University of New South Wales Wind Power Research Center". Famous foreign scholars are invited to the school as part-time professors or honorary professors to give lectures to the students, and excellent undergraduate and graduate students are selected and sent to well-known foreign universities for joint training every year. It also leads and undertakes the "111 Plan" innovative intelligence introduction base project – the innovative intelligence introduction base for big data analysis and processing of the active distribution network.
The school of electrical engineering focuses on national strategies in the fields of rail transit and electric power and major needs of the industry. Under the leadership of the university and joint efforts of all the teacher and student, it has undertaken the fundamental task of strengthening moral education and cultivating students, conducted adjustments with keen determination, and strives hard with pioneering spirit, so as to improve the education quality, running level and discipline strengths of the school. And it also makes great efforts for the long-term goal of building a world first-class characteristic university keen on reforms with pioneering spirit.
